It's difficult to find a door in the same color that's in decent shape for a car that old. There's potentially a lot of work involved in swapping in/out trim and other parts from the old door, which is basically just smashed in the center.
The estimate from the collision shop is the high-end, by-the book job. Swapping in an intact door with the proper interior trim would be simple, but unlikely to find one that doesn't need repainting.
IMHO the other party was dumb in going to their ins. co, as they will surely pay dearly (in terms of increased premiums...) for an accident involving a young driver that was entirely her fault (our car was parked).
We won't abandon the car in any case. It's still entirely drivable (the driver's window won't open, of course), but I don't really want to just swap in a door of a random color - that would look truly awful, I think.
