If you remove the seat and place it on on a workbench tilted headrest down you can gain access to the lower half of the seat back by removing the 3 or 4 hog rings at the bottom. Saab uses a 2 inch wide white strap as lumbar. It essentially only keeps the seatback from being concave and even when fully tightened by the knob it is of limited support. I was able to bypass the adjustment knob and wire-tie the strap directly to the seat frame making it equivalent to full adjustment. Your could stop there if you are happy with the comfort. I experimented with forming some half round strips of closed cell foam and after some trial and error was able to add to the lumbar very comfortably. The seat in my 1996 is now the most comfortable seat that I have ever had in a car since the lack of good lumbar support was the only negative with that seat design in my opinion.
Good luck, Mike
