Can a car eat speedometer sensors?

I'm having a bit of difficulty with an 89 turbo. The speedometer quit some time ago... it would come to life occasionally and then quit. I confirmed that the gear drive is working. Old sensor wasn't doing anything at speedo when spun.
I put another sensor in... one from a parts car 92 S. It physically fit but was a different part number starting in 92. I assumed this was possibly because the connector changed. Same wire colors, so I spliced the old connector to the new-to-me speed sensor. Is this electrically different afterall?
At any rate, when I connected this to the car and turned the pin on the sensor, the speedometer responded! I installed the sensor and drove the car- speedometer needle chaotically jumped all over the place then went dead. When I pulled the sensor back out, I can't get any activity at the speedometer when spinning it.
Any insights? I pulled the cluster and cleaned the connector contacts, only lost those 2 little assholes, into the abyss, twice. (I did upgrade the backlighting to green LEDs though, which looks pretty cool.)
