Thanks for the tip about the bleeder screws, didn't think of that.
Yes, the piston was already retracted. If I had installed the caliper, then I would have discovered after already doing the work that it was defective, resulting in more work. Somebody here wrote about this very annoyance, so I decided to check the adjuster before installing. I'm glad I did.
Maybe I expect too much, but I think a newly rebuilt caliper's adjuster should work without applying pressure on the piston. AutoZone agreed and ordered a replacement.
