On my '97 when I had a clutch hydraulic problem, it was the rubber hose portion of the line connecting the master to the slave. It had burst, but due to its location the fluid that came out was hard to see. If that hose has burst (or the line rusted), you might get a situation where fluid would be expelled when you press the pedal down, then air would be sucked in when you release the pedal.
