,,, there's a fix for the brake light socket problem that's pretty easy.
What seems to happen is, the pressure on brake light bulbs is double that of the single-contact bulbs and the current draw is higher. They heat up enough, if applied for long stretches, to melt the plastic into which the light nickel plated bulb socket is clipped, and the clips yield and the socket pulls apart.
You're right, it's darn common. I've pulled that rear bulb cluster out of many junkyard cars only to see that it's worse than mine was. I've also found a few that are pristine.
You can drill two small holes in the backplate of the bulb cluster at 180 degrees opposite on two sides of the tin socket, where there are openings in the side of the socket.
Then you take a piece of medium-thickness insulated stranded wire, strip, fold and crimp one end into one opening in the socket, solder it in place, run the other end out thru one hole in the back panel and in thru the other, strip the other end, push the socket down into its proper place, run the wire thru the hole on that side, pull tight, and crimp and solder it there too. A good firm durable hold-down that won't melt away.
You might also need to reattach the common ground wire where it is hooked to that socket's contact point, just a pinch-crimp on a single strand of copper wire. It cuts thru the insulation but also tends to cut into and crack the wire, if it gets moved around at all.
