So last night I started up my '93 Aero 5spd to pick up the GF from work and it cranked very slowly but started. Voltage readout on dash said only 7.1. I drove about 8 miles (25 min) downtown to pick her up and left the car running while I waited. She hopped in and we started to head back and decided to stop at the liquor store. I parked the car and when went inside the store and when we came out about 10 min later the car was rough to start and did start (i think, could here the engine running??) but the RPM showed only 100 ?? and the TCS CTRL light was illuminated so I turned the key off. I feared the worse but didn't panic and popped the hood. All looked well, nothing out of place so I tried to start her up again... This time it didn't fire at all and barely turned over. Leaving the key on I got a 5 blink CEL which corresponds to the throttle position sensor. GF called AAA they happened to come super fast which was nice... He hooked up his diagnostic tool to the battery to do a load test and it said the battery needed replacing. He put the jumper pack on it and sure enough, it started right up. When it did restart the CEL code was not present and I drove the car back to our apartment without issue. When I got home I shut the car off and restarted it no problem. The guy said that he also tested my alternator (had me hold the revs at about 3k for a sec) and my starter and both checked out okay.
I will be buying a new battery but I have two questions...
1.) What is the CORRECT type of battery for a 1993 9000 Aero?
2.) Was the initial start up weirdness and TCS code a by-product of the dead battery/nothing to worry about? OR is it possible that some sort of ETS system fault caused my battery to drain/no start situation?
I suppose I will find out in time after replacing the battery. The AAA guy also pointed out that I don't have the proper securing plate for the battery tray (knew this) and that he said it will cut the batt life in half because it will vibrate and move around (using cardboard to keep it from shifting too much haha)... is this true?
