The bushing caps typically crack front-to-back along the axis of the bushing - you will be able to see this just by looking at the ends, cracks will be evident if they exist.
I can't tell you what worn steering rack bushings feel like as I replaced the entire rack before this occurred. Loose steering is often caused by loose clamp bolts on the U-joint between the steering shaft and the steering rack, located just above your right foot. Can't hurt to tighten up both clamp bolts (there is one under the rubber boot). Another possibility is worn tie rod ends.
