I drive the car up onto two wooden ramps I made. They're about 5-6" high. Then I put the metal ramps in place and drive up on them.
Maybe I don't need to get the car so high. I previously replaced the exhaust system in 2008 and now that you mention it, maybe I don't need a lot of clearance, but it's always nice to have the extra room.
When I do the job, maybe I'll drive it up on the smaller wooden ramps and if I don't have enough clearance I'll go onto the steel ramps. I estimate the steel ramps to get the car about 12" off the ground.
