I too wanted to work on jets at the same age, but was more set on the electronics aspect. When I joined, I became an F-15 avionics system specialist (specializing in radar, navigation, and HUD) and loved every minute of it. This led to my current career as an avionics engineer, fortunately still with fighter jets. Being Air Force can lead to being sent to some war zones, remote areas, or hot spots, so there are some risk involved (I'm sure you're aware of this). I have seen quite a few technically gifted female Air Force members on the flight-line, including mechanics (jet engine, hydraulics, structure repair etc...), who have performed their jobs quite commendably. There's a lot of camaraderie among flight-line personnel so no worries there...
