Sounds like a crank position sensor to me!
I don't have the manual in front of me, but I'm 90% sure the Trionic ECU (which controls the fuel pump via the relay) doesn't have an input to tell it the engine is cranking. Instead it detects cranking by seeing the signal from the crank position sensor. No signal = ECU doesn't think the engine is turning = no fuel pump.
The fact it's sometimes worse when the engine is hot reinforces this, as crank sensors often fail in a way where they'll work when cold but not when hot.
