The thermostat is relatively high in the cooling system so not all the coolant needs to be drained. Enough coolant can be removed by disconnecting the vent hose between the radiator and coolant reservoir from the reservoir, then connecting a 3 foot long tube between the reservor vent barb and a 1+ gallon container. About a gallon of coolant can be forced out of this tube by applying a couple PSI air pressure to the disconnected radiator vent hose.
If you don't care if coolant splashes all over, a drain plug in the engine block can be removed to drain the block. The plug is on the front lower side of the engine block right next to the flywheel flange, near the engine speed sensor on the later engines. This is an easy way to drain coolant from the heater core, head, block etc.
