Intermediate shaft question

The (internal) splines on the transmission side of my 97 5spd's intermediate shaft decided to give way recently. The Splines on the drive stub coming from the trans still look good.
Been trying to track down the 5spd-specific intermediate shaft - saabsite lists one ($190+) for new, and might have a couple from the classifieds.
Auto intermediate shafts seem to be readily available for <$20 new.
I *think* the auto shaft is a bit shorter, and I know if you do an engine/trans swap you've got to make sure the bracket is correct you'll tear up the shaft because of misalignment. Since I just want to replace the failed shaft, that doesn't apply here.
Does anyone know the if the length is the only difference between the shafts? Are the stub diameters/spline counts the same?
