Put it all back together last night and tried to start the engine. Went something like this: crank-crank-crank-fire/clunk/massive shudder-die.
Visually inspected the engine for something obvious and tried again. Same scenario.
I pulled the plugs and did a compression test. 190ish across all cylinders. So the valves are still good, and the timing is right.
Or is it?
The "shudder" is the most I've ever seen an engine rock on poly mounts, and the sound was something like the world's most heinous knock. I get the impression the engine is trying to fire the wrong cylinder. Maybe on the up stroke. But how could that be?
I've done this job several times, but I've never had to assemble the lifters and cams myself. I did make sure the exhaust cam had the distributor cutout, but could I have installed something 180 degrees off without any obvious indications?
Ugh.
