Well, the head gasket was leaking oil at the exhaust-trans corner, as were the inlet and return tubes on the turbo, which dripped onto the cat and smoked up through the grill. Annoying and smelly. I also wanted to reseal the sump, but I can't remove a few large torx bolts with the axle carrier in place.
Other than the leaks, and some fleeting boost issue, everything worked just fine. Probably no need for a valve job, either, but I took the head in to have a few broken exhaust studs removed, and to be resurfaced, and figured "it's off, so why not?". Approaching 200k, it seemed like a reasonable thing to do.
I remember my 91 CD with LH had a sensor on the crank pulley. I think the updated CPS arrived with Trionic (94?).
