Did this start after you replaced the check valve? I don't discount the possibility of a bad valve cover gasket, though I would expect to see much more oil. Could be wrong, though.
Check the PCV nipple and grommet, and the large PCV hose that runs to the intake/turbo coolant pipe/throttle body coolant hose. Mine had an inconspicuous crack around that tight bend and the symptoms were similar to yours.
Try holding a lit cigarette or extinguished match around suspect areas. Smoke will be pulled into vac leaks.
