Craig, SMP thanks for the feed back. So investigated the issue some more. I raised the front end of the car so the wheels are off the ground. Then started the car and ran through the gears to run at 40MPH. The bad news is the whine appears to come from the transmission! Blocked the active wheel to move the drive to the other side and the whine is still present.
A couple of days back replaced the Trainny oil with Castrol 10w40 and it did not make any improvements on the whine. The oil that came out was black, but could not see any metal bits at all. The oil plug just had a small amount of gray very fine sludge like deposits, no metal bits.
The transmission shifts very smoothly, no syncro problems etc. Outside of the whine the trainny works great.
Does this sound like the bearings on the input or output shafts? Can those bearings be replaced without taking the trainny out? Since the whine appears to be equal no matter which side is being driven on it sounds to me like the issue maybe a common bearing versus a bearing on the shafts, unless they are bad on both sides.
Note also the whine is the same if cruising at some speed over 35 and I put it in neutral or press in the clutch.
Has anyone put in any additive to help with transmission whine that may prolong the life of the trainny?
Do you think it is safe to drive it with this issue?
Thanks for your opinions.
Tony
