When started the Saab Trionic ignition system is rather dumb about which cylinder to fire, so it fires both plugs on cylinders approching TDC. From there it gets smart and learns which cylinder fired via spark plug ionization sensing, and will fire the proper plugs until it is shut off. So as others have been saying, as long as the cam to crank timing is correct, the Trionic system will do the rest. This is a unique system that uses the spark plugs to determine timing, knock, and misfire all via the ionization signal from the spark plugs. The timing is automatically derived from the crank position sensor and ionization response, no intervention required.
Actually it takes a while for the Trionic system to settle on which individual cylinder to fire. The engine temperature has to be over 140 degrees and exceed ~ 1400 RPM before it stops firing 2 cylinders at once, and only fires the one coming up on the compression stroke.
