Saab 9000 misfire/hesitation when accelerating

I have a curious problem with my much loved Saab 9000 CSE Anniversary, 2.3 Turbo, 98 model.
It has baffled my excellent mechanic - also the local Saab specialist, and an expert with a gas analyser.
Somewhere between 1800 and 2500 rpm (especially around 2400) the engine hesitates for a second and then runs perfectly normally beyond that.
If accelerating hard through that range it’s as if the car has been hit by a sledgehammer momentarily, but then it recovers and carries on normally.
If accelerating gently it’s harder to tell, but I think it usually – maybe always – hesitates in that range.
I just wonder if anyone has had this same problem and found a solution?
Also, if started and left to idle, the engine will start to race after a while, and then slow to normal after a few seconds.
The expert with the gas analyser could see the Lambda sensor spike, but not why. ‘Check engine’ comes up on the display and although it can be cleared, it soon comes up again.
We have checked everything we can think of. Changed plugs, checked for vacuum leaks. MAP and MAF sensors seem ok.
My previous 9000 LPT once had a similar problem when accelerating hard and that was found to be a problem with the turbo wastegate, but my mechanic doesn’t think that can be the problem here because the turbo isn’t working at that rpm.
He feels it must be a fuel problem, not ignition.
Fuel consumption is up a little – maybe 5%.
Any ideas gratefully received!
