Panel on 96 CS had a crack too - got it off & one on 98 CSE and switched them. 96 looks better and it's nice not to get pinched when opening hatch.
There were five quarter turn fasteners holding interior panel plus two window frame torx screws, then handle w/two torx. Counted ten washer-nuts 10mm holding décor panel - easily removed with ratchet and unplug fog light. Only hitch was went got ambitious and decided to replace 1 burned out license plate bulb. Made mistake of laying lense & bulb assembly on lower hatch tray - forgot about and tried to close hatch - smashed it but was able to salvage one from other panel. 98 CSE is Automatic but was in great shape - only thing not working was driver's seat heat - strong car few repairs - heartbreaker. Thanks again to all.
