I'm kind of joking, but not really. One reason cars quit suddenly is, they run out of gas.
I know you said you can smell gas at the tailpipe, but that's an odor that lingers.
Crack loose the 17mm bolt at the end of the fuel rail and crank briefly - - does it spray gas all over? It should.
Or, pull a vacuum line off the manifold and spray some starter fluid, brake cleaner, a little bit of gas, whatever - - inside, then crank. It should roar briefly to life if car's not running because not getting fuel.
There's a way to jumper from fuse to fuse so fuel pump is getting power all the time. With such a jumper in, on a quiet day you should be able to hear the gasoline gurgling thru the fuel rail and back to the tank via the fuel pressure regulator, like a little brook burbling.
You mention suspecting losing compression. That would be a massive failure, to happen suddenly and on all four cylinders, not likely. You could have had an overheating failure but the signs would've been hard to ignore. Doesn't seem likely one would be big enough to burn valves or blow holes in tops of pistons. Have you been doing anything to tweak the boost?
Another thought - - if it seems to have liquid in the fuel system and is pumping and spraying it, what is it? Could your gas have lots of water in it, or something else less burnable than good old gasoline?
Keep on posting, we love stories.
