From what I've read it will work but you'll get a check engine light. Later cars had OBD II, I think that's main difference.
BUT - - If you don't have switched power to the ECU, or have it and it's intermittent, the big suspect would be the contacts in the ignition switch.
While doing that test's Step 2 try wiggling the key and see if it brings the light back or makes it flicker.
It'd be easier to borrow the ignition switch from the other car than the ECU. Also it would seem to me to be a more likely culprit.
A couple torx screws I think drop that panel below steering wheel, then two tiny metric allen screws (just loosen em) let switch free from back of lock cylinder, then maybe you'll need to snip a zip tie to get enough slack to unplug the big connector off the back.
The switches can be drilled and popped open and contacts cleaned, or I think they are still available new.
