You're right, the head juts out over it and the oil pan juts out under it. It's sandwiched and even if you could coax it out of there and back in without tearing heck out of the head gasket the likelihood is as Simon said that it will leak forever. And these would be serious leaks, at either the joint with the head or the oil pan.
But I'm wondering how bad the leak is and just where it is.
The timing cover to block seam rarely leaks unless it was taken apart and badly re-sealed. Ditto timing cover to oil pan. Timing cover to head might leak at front and rear corners but that would be probably minor and you might be able to clean it up and gob something over it that would hold.
But the timing cover holds the oil pump cover which in turn holds the front main crankshaft seal. Both can leak, the oil pump cover massively since it has pressurized oil just inside it. The crank seal can leak but that's sometimes a leak you could live with.
Those two can be fixed relatively cheaply. Give it a new serpentine belt at the same time unless that belt is fairly new.
If it really does have a big leak around the timing cover to block seam you'd spend less money shopping around for another 9000 that doesn't leak there, than you would paying for a head removal and timing cover removal to try to fix it. My question would be WHY does it have such a leak and how could it have developed?
How Saab-experienced is your mechanic? He might be right but we're getting a pretty vague description of the problem.
