There are mythical stories of freezing the timing cover as mentioned below, but I have never heard of it working. The odds of getting the timing cover out with the head in situ and NOT mangling the head gasket are almost nil, I can tell you from my experience doing head gaskets, as well as the timing cover aspects of these engines.
