I probably should have posted this at the General board. Scott, feel free to relocate it.
Mastercool didn't respond to my e-mail. On the other hand they're a great place to phone if you like Frank Sinatra hold music. I got through to a techie finally on the 3rd phone call.
The shut-off valve is located at one end of the yellow charge/evac hose. It is an automatic valve. The valve is spring loaded. It moves in and out. When the valve is pushed in the hose opens. The idea is that when you connect that end of the hose the valve is forced open (pushed in) so you can use the hose for charging or evacuating. When you disconnect that end of the hose the valve closes (pushes out) automatically. Thus saving the planet from certain destruction.
For some reason the adapter on my can tap (Mountain model 8401) attaches easily and depresses the valve properly. The adapter for my vacuum pump (FJC model 6014 adapter) wasn't depressing the valve. The techie told me to try adjusting the tightness of the hose on the theory that maybe the attachment was too loose or tight for the valve to operate as designed.
What I found is that when I make the hose attachment to the FJC adapter REALLY tight (by hand, no tools) the valve opens. Problem solved, although not quickly or in a satisfying way.
Tools for R134a systems have been around a long time. One would think that by now you can buy the gauge set, can tap, vacuum pump adapter, etc. from various manufacturers with no interoperability problems. But in my experience the Mastercool hose and the FJC adapter don't play well together.
