I had this problem on my 1996 9K until I discovered that the sensor(just another diode) was located in a poor spot. I moved the sensor five years ago to a location just inside the left grille snout and it works well there, secured by a tie wrap. When you shut down the engine after driving more than half an hour, the sensor will display 122 degrees from the nearby radiator air flow, but on driving, cooler air resets the diode to a more accurate reading.
I know you love to learn about cheap fixes that work!
