Smoking Turbo - Safe to unplug BPC

Have HPT 96 9000 [it's a converted LPT many years ago] that has started exhaust smoking and sometimes around turbo. Was suggested by one turbo fellow that to lessen wear on turbo to buy some time before replacing turbo that could unplug the BPC unit. Cars is not smoking too bad; seems to do it in mornings after sitting overnight; though not always.
Tried unplugging it today - seemed to drive OK around town. Noticed a little smoke coming from under hood after a while; so plugged electrical line back in. Thought could hear turbo spinning while unplugged and noticed boost jump slightly once [trying to stay off boost].
Wondering if this is safe and or if there is a safer way to baby turbo for a month or so. Do have old LPT ECU that could install and have read about disconnecting "W" & "C" hoses from BPC.
Any suggestions welcome.
