One of the first things I learned in an analog design class at Northeastern University was that the forward bias across a PN junction (diode or BJT transistor) changes 25.5 mv/ degree Celsius. So you could use anything, a 1N4003 diode or the emitter/base junction of a 2N3055 transistor (NPN) as your sensor.
I know that the EDU slot ranges the output with a maximum display value of 122 deg F (50 C). I don't know what the bottom end of the range is. I now live near Burbank, CA and only see readings as low as 24 deg F (-4.4 C).
You now have a science fair project to produce a working sensor.
Best regards, Ken
