You've reminded me of other details. What I described is what happens with old worn keys.
My car came with two regular keys and an odd looking T-shaped key that isn't made to fit a keyring. I guess it is intended for carrying in a wallet "just in case" or for mechanics to use.
Anyway, my odd looking key is in new condition. The ignition cylinder is not at all fussy about this like-new key. You'll probably be okay when you get a new key. When my cylinder refuses to work with old keys then I'll drill a hole in the goofy looking key for my keyring and switch to it.
There's another thing that is weird when keys get worn. You can remove them from the ignition with the engine running. The engine, transmission, etc. keep working as if the key was inserted. My like-new key cannot be removed without turning off the engine.
So... we can be pretty sure that the keys are softer than whatever they contact inside the cylinder. I think it is very unlikely that keys and ignition cylinders will both "die" at the same time.
