I'd bet it's a parted o-ring on the oil pump cover. Oil then gets all over everything down there. I think the path is down onto the axle and then crawling along it and getting flung off.
Anyways you have a problem that needs fixing soon. First make sure your oil pressure sender is working: when you first turn the key on you should see a picture of an old fashioned oil can under the hood area of the pictogram. That's the low oil pressure light and senders sometimes go bad; if no sender you'll get no warning if oil drops too low so fix that too if so.
On my first 9000 the oil pump cover o-ring had cracked straight thru and was also hard as a rock. Made a big leak while brother was driving the car and with no oil pressure light he cluelessly drove the car to its ruin.
Some buy a massive internal circlip release tool to get the cover off (after crank pulley is off). I have done it twice with a stiff poking tool to go in the hole and pry one end of circlip inwards, then a series of small screwdrivers to pry clip out of its groove while working around the circle. About 1/3 of the way it starts to get easier, just past half way it suddenly comes out the rest of the way. Back in by same method. Less time than driving to buy the tool.
