Alternator Posted by ELaw [Email] (#699) [Profile/Gallery] (more from ELaw) on Mon, 11 Jan 2016 11:17:57 In Reply to: Re: 5,000mi without an idler pulley, BobS, Thu, 7 Jan 2016 15:59:30 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Looking at the diagram in the first post, I'd also be worried about the alternator. The alternator can take a fair amount of power (up to about 2-1/2 HP) and deleting the idler reduces the contact area between the belt and the alternator a lot. Contact with the PS pulley is decreased too, but not as much and the PS pump doesn't need as much power.
What I'd probably do if I were going to run such a setup is try to do a max-load test on the alternator. Disconnect the fuel injectors and crank the engine for 10-15 seconds to drain the battery a bit (so it will need recharging). Then start the car, let it idle, and turn everything electrical on to the highest setting and see if the voltage drops or if there's any evidence of belt slip.
That's a pretty tough test and if it passes you're probably in good shape.
