My non-turbo 9000 hatchback has fired each of the seat belt pretensioners at random times recently. I have no idea what triggered them, as the passenger side went with a bang as I was backing out of a parking space. It took me several minutes to work out what had happened as my british car attuned mind was thinking a massive electrical short had caused the bang and smoke. Since there was no one in the passenger seat to tell me that the seat belt could no longer be pulled out.
Today, nonchalantly driving down a straight road at 45 mph, I was suddenly punched in the gut. As I now knew the scent of explosive, I immediately knew the drivers side seat belt had blown. No impact, no sudden change of speed, or any other trigger.
Now I'm scared that the airbags ate on some similar allah-hu-akbar plan... should I try to disable or remove them?
Is there any obvious electrical problem or sensor that could have fired off the pretensioners?
