As I mentioned before, I went through an 88 trans completely about 10 years ago so my memory is spotty. That said you need to pull the transmission and separate the case to replace that differential bearing.
From what I understand the bearing preload was too loose causing axial play. That could be due to bearing wear or a missing shim which caused the race to back out. The preload for the early 9k trans(I don't imagine later would be that different) is set by pressing the race in with a jackscrew while turning the gears. Torque to 14.8 lbf and stop. With a depth gauge measure the depth to the race and the protrusion on the bearing retainer. Total shim thickness is the difference minus 0.4mm.
Unless your bearing is badly trashed you might be able to reset the preload.
