It's been a while, between bad weather the early part of the month, being otherwise busy, and trying to figure out how to get that big circlip out I have not been able to attack my oil pump leak until today.

After trying various attacks, what finally worked was using a large set of Harbor Freight circlip pliers with right-angle tips and using a 3" C-Clamp to squeeze, as in the photo. Once the clip was partially disengaged it pulled out using a screwdriver and needle-nose pliers.

It took a little persuasion to get the pump cover off and the original o-ring was so brittle it immediately broke into pieces. I believe that I managed to get the new seals in place and everything back together without damage. The oil pump has been primed with vaseline and the pump cover and circlip are properly oriented. I cleaned the threads on the big pulley bolt and used blue Loctite, torquing it to 125 foot-pounds. (This required using a cheater pipe on my 1/2" drive torque wrench. A long heavy-duty screwdriver inserted into the pulley prevented it from turning.) It was much easier to get the big circlip installed than getting it out thanks to it being free of the engine and the locking feature on the pliers.

I got a minor unwelcome surprise when I went to add oil, which requires unlocking the car - the battery was stone cold dead! It turns out the hatch had been popped. Probably did it accidentally while fumbling for keys in my pocket while in range. Unlike my '95, the '97 does not chirp when the remote unlocks the hatch. Over a period of days or weeks the light inside the hatch drained the battery down.

I won't know if this all works until the engine is fired up but I need to install the serpentine belt kit purchased from Eeuroparts first. That's a project for another day, hopefully soon.

Thanks to everyone that provided suggestions and info on my original post.
