Yeah, time is taking its toll and this kind of bizarre electrical behavior is frequently a grounding issue. I know there's a ground on the fender and one on the left side under the aquarium cover so I'll clean those up. I found the connector that the headlight sockets go through, that had some corrosion inside but when I cleaned it up it made no difference.
A trick I sometimes use for old cars with electrical glitches is to wire around a problem. In this case if cleaning the existing grounds doesn't help what I'll probably try next is running a new ground directly to the headlights to see what happens.
