Just wanted to give my impressions of the 9000 on a cross country trip recently completed. Route was Boston/DC/knoxville/Memphis/OKCity/Amarillo/Gallup/Phoenix/SanDiego. The 9000 was a 97 CS (with 165k miles) with a lot of preventative work completed 2 months prior including; timing chain and guides replcmt, head gasket, and various coolant hoses that seemed soft. Most peripheral engine components were replaced over the last few years, radiator, battery, fuel pump, starter, etc so I was pretty confident of the car's reliability. So my impressions.....
- the 9000 is a really great highway car completing around 450 miles/day fully loaded (with one inch lifts under the rear coils).
- since I was mostly on I-40 popular with trucks thought truck wind turbulence would be significant, in fact the 9000 handling was very stable at all times (with tire pressures maintained all round at btw 35 and 40 psi.
- the URO brand strange hose with the coolant line inside was replaced a month before trip and was showing cracks in the hose during trip (but apparent did not cause manifold leak).
- was worth it to use a aftermarket seat bottom cushion, although never felt uncomfortable in the standard CS seats.
- using mile markers, odometer and timer found speedo to be accurate (with 16" wheels and 205 55 v16's).
- paid $50 in SD for a detailing and wow what a job they did, well worth the money (here in SD anyways).
- most scenic drive portion was the route south from flagstaff thru Sedona, beautiful. Southern AZ was also interesting, sooo diff from new england.
- nice with new head gskt not worrying bout coolant loss!
- maintained close to 30 mpg for each leg of trip.
- the fake cassette aux-in for listening to music, podasts, etc worked really well (route cord out back of radio to along side of console).
