New Heater Core or Stop Leak Sealant?

My 97 9000 with 245,000 miles on it has had an odor coming through ACC for a couple months now, that I couldn't figure out. My shop finally recognized it as coolant, and concluded Heater Core, from some dampness in the floor area as well. I'm guessing it's a small leak because the windows haven't been fogging and I haven't lost a huge amount of coolant. I'd like to keep the car a while, so... New heater core (and blower motor, I guess) or is it worthwhile trying a stop leak product, considering other risk of plugging something else? Also - not quite getting the physics of this -- Why would I only smell that when stopped and idling?
