My philosophy is don't touch quick-fixes with a ten foot pole, if you value the car. Basically coolant stop-leak works by clogging holes - your radiator and heater core, let alone your engine, has a lot of little holes...I don't trust what they say about only hardening outside the cooling system, etc.
As for why you only smell it when stopped...thats hard to say. Could be co-incidence...If coolant is getting on your feet, it's pretty hard to escape the heater core, there just isn't anywhere else for it to come from.
