Funny you should mention that... Posted by JerseySaab [Email] (#666) [Profile/Gallery] (more from JerseySaab) on Tue, 14 Jun 2016 16:39:48 In Reply to: Rear brake calipers, DanaH, Tue, 14 Jun 2016 13:54:21 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I've just gone through this doing a brake job on my '97 CSE. About 5 years ago I installed "Duralast" (Duracrap?) rebuilt rear calipers. The reason I went this way was to have someplace local to deal with if there were problems. There is also a "lifetime warranty" on the calipers. As I recall back then I had two bad ones out of the box, one leaked like a sieve and the other had a jammed adjuster. I returned them and finally got a couple of good ones.
Fast forward to this week and while installing new pads and rotors I discovered the piston on one of the rears was seized up. So I brought it back to Autozone and they dutifully honored the warranty. Installed the replacement caliper only to find the adjuster did not work at all. It just spun around with no effect. So I had to take the caliper off the car, return it, and get another one. So far so good, we'll see how it works out.
I think that Cardone is the rebuilder since the description on the Autozone web site references Cardone hardware being used. Cardone used to be a quality rebuilder but like so many other things in recent years they seem to have gone downhill. Not sure who, if anyone, does a better job. I can tell you though that Autozone will happily keep throwing calipers at you until you get one that works.
I guess another possibility is to rebuild them ourselves: http://www.saab9000.com/procedures/braking/rearcaliperrebuild.php
