Check the small green wire! Posted by JerseySaab [Email] (#666) [Profile/Gallery] (more from JerseySaab) on Tue, 5 Jul 2016 12:38:30 In Reply to: alternator removal, zeke, Tue, 5 Jul 2016 12:15:41 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I replaced my alternator because not only did it die electrically, it was making all kinds of bad noises (bearings shot). The replacement worked OK for a while then "died" as well. I thought it was defective and exchanged it, only to have the same symptom. It turned out that although the small green wire looked OK from the outside it was badly corroded inside the connector that attaches to the alternator. After fixing this wire all was well.
Definitely worth checking before you swap out the alternator, though fortunately if it comes to that it's not all that bad a job. I took my alternator out from the top. It's tight but if you finagle the orientation it will come out and go back in. As I recall I moved the dogbone engine mount to make more room.
