I got the dash top off, not too bad a job. Didn't bugger things up too badly - lost a couple of small screws and the locking tabs on the sun sensor electrical connector snapped off.
Anyhow after reseating the EDU connector with a little dielectric grease for good measure everything is working again.
Now I just have to clean up the deteriorated foam that managed to get all over the place when the dash top was removed...
