One of the few issues with the one-owner '95 CSE I bought a couple of years ago was a bad right front speaker giving distorted/buzzy sound. So I set the fader for rear speakers only and just lived with it. Then a little over a year ago I ordered a set of generic 4" 4-ohm speakers that were on clearance at Crutchfield. Finally yesterday I got a Round Tuit and decided to replace the front speakers, starting with the bad one. However on testing, the new speaker was tinny-sounding with little volume.
So I took a closer look at the bad OEM speaker. The cone was still intact, the problem was that the suspension had torn around the outer circumference. So figuring there was nothing to lose, I put a bead of black RTV all around to fill in and support the damaged area, smoothing it with a razor blade. I let the RTV cure overnight and to my surprise it now works great! Good sound, no distortion.
Speaker R&R is straightforward, the only problem I ran into was fumbling one of the 8mm speaker fasteners and of course it fell into the dashboard never to be seen again. These are just self-tapping screws though, so I put a Philips self-tapper I had laying around in the lower left spot where there's plenty of room to get a stubby screwdriver in.
Of course I don't know how long this "repair" is going to last or if something else will go wrong with it. Anyone know of a specific replacement speaker that works well in this application?
