Ran into the same problem. From what I can remember the brake master cylinder/booster has to be pulled back real hard towards the radiator and or hood of car. In my case because I was working alone I ended up using bungee cords on the assembly to maintain pulling tension. For the peddle assembly it was nessesary rotate it in different directions until it cleared the master cylinder rod. Once out I had my friend weld and reinforce the clutch peddle cylinder tab on the assembly to make it stronger than before however, I'm finding now that the clutch pressure plate although functioning properly is so stiff that it threatens to brake the fix again. In my case I think it's time for a new pressure plate.
