Fuel pump choices Posted by JerseySaab [Email] (#666) [Profile/Gallery] (more from JerseySaab) on Sat, 17 Sep 2016 08:37:06 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Driving my '97 CSE yesterday it suddenly died while idling at a stop light. Swapped the DIC with a spare and it made no difference. The symptom was that the engine would briefly fire up but immediately stumble and die. Very familiar, same symptom I had about 4 years ago when I replaced the fuel pump. A couple of helpful persons at the scene helped me push the car off to the side, and I had it towed home.
Today I went through the no-start checklist and it looks like it is the fuel pump. What was confusing at first is that the quick tests initially worked. I could hear the pump fire up briefly when turning the ignition on, and the pump would run when jumping fuses 14 and 22. But then when retesting the pump it would not run. So for completeness I went through the no-start checklist and made sure voltage was getting out to the pump. Everything checked out OK and the pump was not running.
So I removed the pump assembly and took it apart. I could see discoloration and melted insulation on the ground terminal where the pump had been drawing too much current.
Last time this happened I just replaced the pump cartridge with a new Walbro unit. (I'm definitely disappointed in its short lifespan!) This time I'm thinking it would be best to replace the entire assembly given the age of the components plus it's a lot less hassle. So it comes down to the Saab OEM part at $305 or the Proparts part at $130 (Eeuropart prices).
I think I already know what the answer is to this but my Rambler Mentality demands me to ask it anyway - is the low-cost Proparts fuel pump assembly any good? What kind of pump does it come with? Original Walbro, or a Chinese knockoff that's likely to die in short order?
Since it looks like the pump was drawing too much current I'm thinking it would probably be a good idea to replace the relay as well.
