testing the speedometer

I'm old. I ache. I don't like crawling under cars or stretching way over top of manifolds etc.
I have the dash cover off. Is there a way to test the speedo connector to tell if it is delivering the correct pulse without the use of a scope? I have a set of fuel injector test lights, several digital multimeters, but no portable scopes.
All of the methods I have read have the drive being spun by a drill, but if its my speedo that is bad I still won't know just by doing that.
Anyone know how to test the output?
