While preparing to remove the upper valve body I found what looks like a piece of a broken spring on the outside. The big question of course is where did it come from? It's a very light gauge spring wire.
The springs in the upper valve body look OK.
Though I tried to be as careful as possible removing the cover, of course a screw, spring, and possibly a spacer managed to fly out. I did find them all, however I'm not sure whether the spacer was actually in there or if it rolled off of the workbench (which as you can see above is not the tidiest place in the world).
On the one hand it does not really seem to fit anywhere, the material it's made of is unlike anything else I've seen in the valve body so far, and it is not shown in the Saab service service bulletin diagram provided by Townsend. On the other hand I could swear it came out of there when the cover was removed!
There seems to be very little information out there regarding ZF 4HP18 valve body internals - I get the feeling that mere mortals are not meant to tread here. I might have to call Eriksson Industries and ask whether that spacer belongs in there or not.
In any event, aside from wondering where that piece of broken spring came from I'm not finding a smoking gun yet that explains the symptoms. In particular the governor looks to be OK, I took it apart and it's clean inside with all of the valves working smoothly, no sign of issues there. Also I removed the top cover off the main valve body and it seems to be OK under there. I probed where I could for broken springs and to see if valves were stuck.
Also - I just found a thread on another forum that has a lot of info, might be the jackpot for valve body details: http://www.saabcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=621921
(Update: I called Eriksson and they referred me to a PDF file for the 4HP18Q trans on their site. It shows no spacer so it should be safe to toss out the "mystery part" and put the upper valve body back together.)
