Sure, if you have photos of how you did it I'd love to see it. Arthritis and bad knees suck for doing this kind of work! I think I'll be able to find a strong helper or two though especially if I wave a few bucks and maybe a six-pack under their noses.
I've got some railroad ties left over from an old landscaping project that should be suitable for the engine support. The online guides (which are aimed primarily at clutch replacement) say to pull the trans out from the top with an engine hoist. I've been told though that it's possible to pull it out from the side using a motorcycle or transmission jack.
A problem is that we'll be running out of good weather here in the Northeast very soon - I have to work outside and winter is coming. So probably this project will have to wait until spring, but I may be able to do some of the prep work for trans removal before it gets too cold out.
Right now I don't have a source for a used transmission anyway. Saab 9000s disappeared from the local boneyards years ago. I'll be keeping an eye out on the big auction site as well as the list that guy Craig runs to see if something reasonably local becomes available.
I'm probably crazy for going this far. The car is rusty and has well over 300,000 miles on the clock. I just hate the idea of scrapping it.
