You have another post stating that the outside air temp sensor isn't working. I have found that the outside air temp sensor absolutely influences the behavior of the climate control system for both cooling and heating. I installed a used outside air temp sensor and the climate control system is back to normal.
Your problem may have little to do with the inside air temp sensor. Many cars use a similar setup - on my Audi A4 there was a small hole in the console beneath the climate control buttons, connected to a six-inch tube and a sensor/fan similar to what's in the SAAB 9000.
