Cruise Control Brake Pedal Switch 1 Saabers Like This Post! Posted by sam96CS [Email] (#852) [Profile/Gallery] (more from sam96CS) on Mon, 6 Mar 2017 13:41:49 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Planning a trip this summer and wanted to fix the cruise control on my '96 automatic (235K miles). I wasn't sure how to disengage the brake pedal switch from the bracket, so I removed the 12 mm bolt that holds the bracket. I cleaned the switch with a toothbrush, checked the plunger and electrical operation, then installed. Cruise works again. I don't know why. Maybe the dust bothered the plunger operation or maybe the switch wasn't fully engaged in the metal bracket.
Anyway, for what it's worth, here are my notes to myself about the switch:
On the automatic there's a single switch that is operated by the brake pedal. The switch has a plunger that extends when the brake pedal is pressed. The switch is held in place by a metal bracket, Saab part number 4067468. An electrical harness connects to the back of the switch. The harness has 2 wires, one red and one white. The switch is Saab part 43 50 443. The metal bracket has an alignment tab and is held in place by a 12 mm nut. The switch is made in Germany by Hella. I saw no evidence that the plunger is adjustable in any way. Electrically there is infinite resistance (the switch is "off") when the plunger is extended (brake pedal is pressed) and no resistance (switch is "on") when the plunger is not extended. There's no middle position; the switch is either on or off.
Brake pedal pressed = switch off = cruise is disengaged.
Brake pedal released = switch on = cruise can be engaged.
It looks like the plunger's operation could be affected by accumulated dust/grunge or if the switch is bumped so that one of its two retention tabs is disengaged from the metal bracket. It doesn't look like there is anything to adjust. The switch either works or it doesn't.
