The leak might be caused by the broken exhaust manifold stud, a not-uncommon problem on these engines, allowing exhaust gasses to escape. I had a similar scenario on my previous 9000 before I drilled out and replaced two broken exhaust studs.
After starting the cold engine, put your hand near the outboard side of the exhaust manifold and see if you can feel a leak - should be fairly obvious if there are exhaust gasses escaping. BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO TOUCH THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD, AS IT GET HOT QUICKLY.
